What to Do for Gay Men on Kauai

One of the common questions I get from both visitors and new residents is “what is their to do if you are gay on Kauai? I have lived on Kauai for over 20 years. Kauai has no “gay ghetto,” no gay bars and very few gay identified businesses. There are several gay men living on Kauai but many have integrated with the community and there are only a few that attend GLBT events. Most of what does happen on Kauai is what I term “organic” in nature-meaning that there are few regular events and finding out about them is not easy unless you live here.
I post the newsletter for the GLBT community. You may receive the newsletter in email form by writing me and requesting to be on the Lambda Aloha mailing list. You may also return to this page for monthly updates or look up LambdaAloha on Facebook.

Beaches

Kealia Beach is located at the ten mile marker on the main road north of Kapaa. This beach is popular with surfers but it is also where the GLBT community bonfires are hosted. Sunday gatherings also are common between 11am. and 4pm. at the north end near the jetty rocks. Both events are weather dependent. Some facilities are available.

Larsons Beach is north of Moloa’a and is one of two beaches where nude sunbathing occurs. It should be noted that nude sunbathing is illegal on all beaches in Hawaii. Directions -From Princeville on Hwy. 56. Take Koolau Road as it brances off route 56 near the 20 mile marker (about 8 miles). Go 1.2 miles on the paved road to a sugar cane road on the left. You’ll immediately have a choice of several roads. Take the hard left (white mail box 7200A and KOA Properties Reality sign) and go 1 mile to the beach parking area. From Lihue; drive past Anahola town and look for a Moloa’a Sunrise Fruitstand on the right. Turn right onto Koolau Rd. and drive 2.3 miles. You will turn (120 degree turn with white mailbox 7200A and KOA Properties Reality sign) right onto a cane road. Follow road down to beach. Do not leave valuables in your car. When you walk down toward the beach take the wide path to the left for about a 1/2 mile. Do not go past the cluster of lava rock. Swim here with extreme caution as rip tides are common. No facilities are available here.

Secrets Beach also known as Kauapea Beach is just north of Kilauea town and is the only other beach where nude sunbathing can be overlooked. You must walk to the far end of the beach to do so. It is also risky to swim here. Many swim with dolphins from this beach during the early morning hours summer. Directions-head north of Kilauea and turn right at the first Kalihiwai Road. Turn right on the first dirt road. You will see a two story dark wood home. Take the foot trail to the left of the home along a fence down to the bottom. No facilities are available here.

Lydgate Beach Park is a family beach park just south of the Wailua bridge in Kapaa. This beach park has been the location of a couple of gay events including the pride picnic. as you enter the park the first road to the right before turning down to the beach is a popular cruise hang with the locals at night.
